Two visits to Budapest. Two apartments, walking distance from downtown. I did not even set foot in the Hilton.

My mother and I saw Budapest like only someone who stays away from the Americanized hotels can. We stayed with the locals. We came to feel the city, not just see it.

Several years later, I returned to Europe on my honeymoon (this time, without my mother). The first two nights in a little village near Schaffhausen, Switzerland, we stayed in the European version of a vacation villa rental: our own unit in a private home, our own balcony overlooking the scenic village, comfort, privacy and peace.

Three weeks of touring brought us to one or two hotels, several bed and breakfasts, and a couple “gasthauses” in Austria and Liechtenstein that felt more like private homes. more…

Well, we returned our first DVD, as it had no sound, or so we thought. When the second one arrived with no sound, we asked a friend for help. After adjusting the settings on our DVD player, we now can hear the monotone narrator and all the train sounds.

To give you an idea of my ds, he enjoyed the DVD without the sound! We watch it every day. There really is a lot of information on this DVD and worth every penny, IMHO.

This list includes the most popular tourist attractions and activities in San Francisco based on a survey done several years ago by the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Around the Town of San Francisco

1. Union Square, one of the city’s three original parks, is now a public space atop a multi-level underground parking garage and ringed with elegant shops and hotels. The Powell cable car line begins about a block away, and the theatre district is nearby.

2. Cable Cars are often called San Francisco’s moving landmark.

3. Chinatown expresses what Western architects thought Chinese buildings should look like. There’s much here that’s created just for the tourist, but with our hints, you can get a glimpse of the “real” Chinatown in its alleys and shops.

4. Lombard, the “Crookedest” Street is neither the crookedest street in San Francisco nor the steepest, but it’s surely the best-known. The “crooked” section is the block below Hyde Street. No car to drive down? Take the cable car to Hyde and Lombard and walk.

5. Coit Tower, atop Telegraph Hill offers panoramic bay and city views, and a bit of San Francisco in the 1930s preserved in its murals.
